Health Care

Farmstead residents are fortunate to have outstanding health care providers within just a few minutes of the community. In addition to hundreds of excellent doctors, nurses and specialists, four nearby medical facilities provide around the clock care.

Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply provides a wide range of medical and surgical services from general surgery to cardiology. More than 96 physicians and specialists contribute to the hospital’s comprehensive services including: cardiac rehabilitation; radiology; cardiopulmonary services; critical care unit; emergency services; maternity; surgical services and physical therapy; and a full service laboratory.

Construction has begun on a new $100 million hospital facility just a few miles north of the existing site. The 200,000 square foot building will house 74 acute beds including medical/surgical, ICU and maternity. The building will include five operating rooms, a pharmacy, laboratory, emergency room, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine and outpatient services including physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation.

SeaCoast Medical Center on Highway 9 near Little River, South Carolina, has 24-hour emergency medical care as well as medically advanced outpatient services including outpatient surgery; digital radiology and diagnostic imaging (including open MRI); physical, occupational and speech therapy; cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation; and diabetes education and management.

More than 40 primary and specialty care physicians serve the center along with an experienced team of trauma nurses. SeaCoast is affiliated with Loris Healthcare System.

In nearby Southport, Dosher Memorial Hospital’s 100-bed facility has served the region for more than 75 years. The services include cardiopulmonary and respiratory therapy; cardiac rehabilitation; diagnostic imaging; emergency services; laboratory services; occupational therapy; physical therapy and skilled nursing.

The region’s premiere medical facility is New Hanover Regional Medical Center which has two campuses in Wilmington and one in Pender County. The teaching and research facility has specialty centers which include the Zimmer Cancer Center, trauma center, emergency services, vascular services; Coastal Heart Center; Cape Fear Orthopaedic Specialty Center; women’s and children’s services; and image services. The new 186,500 square foot Surgical Pavilion opened in summer 2008 and the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital opened in August 2008.

NHRMC is staffed by 490 physicians, 760 volunteers and 4700 employees. It earned a Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence and is fully accredited.
