Educational opportunities are almost unlimited in the area. North Carolina’s community college system has two outstanding campuses nearby. Brunswick Community College in Supply excels in several areas, including its aquaculture program. Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington celebrated 50 years in 2008. Also more than 50 years old, UNC Wilmington is one of the gems of the state’s university system. Each year it earns multiple accolades for outstanding teaching. Coastal Carolina University in nearby Myrtle Beach adds another strong program to the mix.  All of the schools also have strong athletic programs.

 At Brunswick Community College, area residents are provided with affordable programs and services that meet not only educational needs, but cultural. Academic offerings span from accounting to aquaculture technology to electronics engineering and turfgrass management. Students can earn a two year degree or a two-year transfer degree which allows them to transfer to almost any state school in North Carolina. The Odell Williamson Auditorium frequently hosts national touring plays and events. Continuing education programs include computer proficiency, local history and more.

 Ranked as one of the top 10 public master’s universities in the south by US News & World Report for the past ten years, UNCW provides a full range of undergraduate and master's level programs.

Other honors in 2008 include Best in the Southeast and Best Value by The Princeton Review and Top Colleges for Top Students in Peterson’s Competitive Colleges 2008. The school’s creative writing program was recognized as one of the nation’s best by Atlantic Magazine in 2007.

UNCW offers 73 bachelor’s degree programs and 32 graduate programs which include a PhD in marine biology and an EdD in educational leadership.

Additionally, the school has an extensive outreach program of continuing education and public service. The Adult Scholars Leadership Program engages adults with community leaders, experts and policy makers to proactively explore, learn and participate in solutions to our regional challenges. The value of professional experience is central to a program which helps individuals translate their life skills and experience into meaningful volunteer service.  UNCW is one of 119 prestigious universities and colleges in the United States designated as an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

 Through its main campus in downtown Wilmington and satellites elsewhere, Cape Fear Community College has more than 26,500 students enrolled every year. In addition to its 60 technical degree programs, including the newly established Marine Technology program which is the second of its kind in the nation, customized workforce training is provided for local businesses.

Students can earn a two-year college transfer degree to continue their education at a four-year institution. CFCC also offers a wide variety of adult education and continuing education classes for lifelong learning.

In the college's Center for Business, Industry and Government, low-cost classes are offered in computer training, construction, foreign languages, leadership and management. CFCC’s Small Business Center offers scores of free seminars for entrepreneurs and small businesses as well as free business counseling services.

 Founded in 1954, Coastal Carolina University is a liberal arts institution located just minutes from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It offers baccalaureate programs in 40 fields of study including acclaimed programs in marine science, resort tourism and professional golf management. Graduate programs include an MBA as well as master's degrees in education and coastal marine and wetland studies. Waties Island, 1,062 acres of pristine barrier island on the Atlantic coast, provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in marine science and wetlands biology. Students enrolled in Coastal's Professional Golf Management program staff Quail Creek Golf Club, a public 18-hole golf facility located adjacent to the campus. Coastal’s many international partnerships make it possible for students to study in places such as Australia, China, Costa Rica, England, Ecuador and Galapagos Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Russia and Spain.
